Dr Andrew Callaway

Principal Academic in Biomechanics and Performance Analysis · Director, Human Performance Laboratory · Bournemouth University

I build free, browser-based biomechanics and performance analysis tools — biomex.studio, OpenTag.Studio, statstoolkit.com and tpattern — alongside my research and teaching at Bournemouth University. My background spans electronics engineering and computing, which is why these tools exist: closing the gap between biomechanical methods and the software to actually run them.

Background

I trained originally in electronics and computing (BEng Hons, Applied Computing and Electronics, Bournemouth University, 2006), then completed a PhD in Sports Technology on the biomechanics of front crawl swimming, also at Bournemouth. That combination — building the sensor and the analysis pipeline, not just using someone else's — has shaped everything since: validating wearable and sensor-based technologies, assessing movement mechanics and load in the field rather than only in the lab, and analysing performance and injury risk under conditions that actually resemble competition, training, or operational work.

Recent applied work spans elite football (hip strength, player load, change of direction), beach sprint rowing with British Rowing ahead of LA 2028, obstacle course biomechanics with Pentathlon GB, and casualty-handling biomechanics for mountain rescue with Bangor University and Mountain Rescue England and Wales. I supervise PhD, MRes and MSc students across these areas and lead postgraduate provision on the MSc Strength and Conditioning, MSc Sport and Exercise Science, and MSc Sports Performance Analysis programmes.

The free tools on this site — biomex.studio, OpenTag.Studio, statstoolkit.com and tpattern — grew directly out of that research and teaching: things I needed to build for a study or a class, then kept building because students and practitioners kept asking for them.
